Since 2010, it’s been John Pearce 2, everyone else “love.”

The Timpview senior will chase his third straight Class 4A tennis singles championship, starting at 9 a.m. Friday at Liberty Park.

The two-day tournament will run concurrently with the 3A tournament, which begins at the same time but at Brigham Young University.

Timpview is favored in all three singles brackets, with Matthew Pearce and Paul Monson expected to hold down Nos. 2 and 3, as the Thunderbirds chase back-to-back team championships.

The story, however, will be with John Pearce. The other 4A No. 1 seeds in first singles are Highland’s Jihoon Noh, Bonneville’s Parker Jones and Hillcrest’s Michael Mann. Jones reached the quarterfinals last year.

While Pearce chases No. 3 before ending his career, the Class 3A tournament will have a vastly different look without its own three-time champion.

Jordan Lyden won individual titles in each of the first three years of Desert Hills’ existence, but this year No. 1 singles is up for grabs as Dixie’s Zeno Kastelic, Juan Diego’s Brendan Kempin, Spanish Fork’s Cade Sermershein and Bear River’s Tyson Jessop enter the tournament as No. 1 seeds.

Even without Lyden, Desert Hills is a contender to win its third straight Class 3A title.
