The Enterprise softball team has the kind of lineup that is intimidating to face. The Wolves have the second-leading offense in the state this year.

But there is one thing tougher than Enterprise's batting order — its defense.

Teams will look to test the Wolves' 20-game winning streak, but Enterprise seems to be the early favorite in this weekend's 2A state softball tournament starting Thursday in St. George.

Behind sophomore starting pitcher Dakota Robinson, Enterprise has allowed only 28 runs in its 23 games this year, including 12 shutouts. The ludicrously low earned run average is one of the reasons the team has climbed out to a 21-2 record this season and could win the program's first softball championship.

"We have a good team of young girls who have played in some national tournaments," coach Duane Wallin says. "You never know how it might turn out. Hopefully they'll continue to be cool and play like they know no different."

The main challenger to the Wolves should be San Juan, last year's champ, which has knocked out 28 home runs and notched wins against 5A squads such as Pleasant Grove and West Jordan. Manti, traditionally a softball powerhouse, should make waves in its return to the 2A state tournament after dropping down.

A wildcard in the mix should be the Wildcats of South Summit. Shannon Argyle leads Class 2A with 16 wins and helped her team dominate a weak division.

The tournament begins at noon at the Canyons Softball Complex. Winners in the first round will play second round games at 2 p.m.

2A baseball returns to action

After three of the four first-round hosts advanced last weekend, 2A baseball continues at Dixie State College on Thursday morning in St. George.

The morning matchup features hard-hitting Emery taking on Dakota Bullock and Region 14 champ Millard. At 1:30 p.m., the San Juan Broncos will try to find their bats against Gunnison Valley., which features what many believe is the best starting pitching duo in 2A.

Consolation games will be at Dixie and Pine View high schools. Beaver and Enterprise, which played for last year's championship, could be the favorites to make it out of the one-loss bracket.
