Prep baseball: Olympus holds on for win over Hillcrest
After nearly relinquishing a six-run lead, the Olympus baseball team held off Hillcrest, 10-9. In what was an all-out slugfest, the Titans made the most of their hits. Junior catcher Brock Battilyon led the Olympus hitting attack with four runs batted in.
"My approach was just to do my job, no matter what the situation was," Battilyon said. "Whether we needed a sac fly or a base hit, we all did what we had to do to win."
The Titans really dusted off the bats in bottom of the third inning. With the score tied 2-2 and runners on second and third, Battilyon ripped the first pitch he saw over the head of Hillcrest center fielder Brock Whitworth for a triple. Both runners scored on the play. Battilyon drove home two more runs in the fourth inning with a single up the middle.
Olympus had stretched its lead to 10-4 by the end of five innings, but the game was far from over. Hillcrest scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Titans' lead to one run. Senior Buddy Nemeschy fueled the Huskies' comeback with a triple that scored two runs. Nemeschy finished with three hits and four RBIs.
In the end, though, Hillcrest's scoring burst wasn't enough. Sophomore pitcher Rigby Butikofer came in for Olympus and shut down the Huskies in the seventh inning to preserve the win.
"That was a gut check for us," Olympus coach Craig Weston said. "We have struggled and we have folded in other games, but in this game we had some of our younger guys come in and they got the job done."
Battilyon said that holding on to the lead gives the Titans an advantage in the next two games of the series.
"It's huge for us to play well this series to finish the season strong," Battilyon said. "After winning this one, we know we can do it."
