A 46-year-old Riverdale man was found dead early Tuesday morning after he was crushed by a front end loader at Promontory Point.

Mitchel Shaw was found by family members just before 2 a.m., said Box Elder County Chief Deputy Kevin Potter. He said the man had been working on a mineral pond at the site when the accident occurred.

He was working alone, Potter said, and when he didn't return from work Monday evening, his family went to the site to look for him.

Potter said it appears that a hydraulics failure was to blame for the accident. He said it appears Shaw was in the driver's seat, and when the hydraulics on the arm failed, Shaw reached outside of the cab. It was then that the arm fell and crushed him.

Though they are fairly certain that the failed machinery caused the accident, Potter said they are still investigating, but the death does not appear suspicious.
