Boxing fans can get some ringside seats to watch some of the area's best boxers in the region Friday and Saturday with the Golden Gloves Rocky Mountain Regionals taking place at The Sports Mall, 5445 S. 900 East, Murray.

The state champions from Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are participating in the event. Winners move on to the National Golden Gloves Tournament in May in Mesquite, Nev.

Among those competing is Isaac Aguilar, an amateur boxer from West Valley City who is fighting in honor of his father, Victor Aguilar. His father, a pie chef at Marie Callender's, was murdered in 1990 when he surprised a former employee and an accomplice who were trying to break into the store's safe.

Isaac Aguilar "boxes to get away that anger that is in his heart, that has never left his heart," said his mother, Julia Aguilar. "It is a way to release the anxiety of why somebody took his father away." His father's murderer is serving a life prison sentence.

Aguilar will represent Utah in the 123-pound division. He has lost just one bout against a Utah opponent and he made it to the quarterfinals of the National Golden Gloves tournament in 2009.

"Boxing has done a lot for me," Aguilar said. "It has taught me discipline and given me purpose. It has helped me gain a sense of self-worth, and gained me the respect that I didn't have before. I owe a lot to the sport, for where it has taken me."
