Utah State University has fired its top admissions official and turned over what began as a routine audit to law-enforcement officials, the university announced Wednesday.

Jennifer Twiss, 34, had been executive director of enrollment services until an audit of her office discovered “irregularities” in the handling of financial aid, but officials could not provide much information because the audit remains the subject of an ongoing probe.

“During the course of routine internal audits, the university found irregularities in the disbursement of scholarship funds,” university officials said in a statement. “The case is under investigation, and authorities have requested that we wait until their investigation is complete before the university discusses any details.”

The former Jennifer Putnam is a 2001 USU graduate. She is married to Scott Twiss, a real property analyst with USU’s business and finance office. The couple married last year on campus at the Taggart Student Center.

Twiss could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
