Directions • From the fee station in Mill Creek Canyon, drive 2.5 miles to the trailhead. The trail and parking lot are just east of the Mill Creek Inn and on the south side of the road. The Desolation Trail is to the right of the restrooms.
This is a hike that’s good any time of year. In the winter and early spring, walk the trail with snowshoe or traction devices on your boots. In the summer, there is plenty of shade, and in the fall it features changing colors. From the trailhead, follow the signs up the trail. It is generally well-marked, but there are lots of switchbacks; pay attention so you don’t miss a turn. You’ll know you’re at the overlook when you reach the flat spot with a great view. If you hike on a good air day, you can see all the way to the Great Salt Lake.
