Utah and Utah State don’t play each other often in women’s basketball. That means Thursday’s 7 p.m. Women’s National Invitational Tournament game at the Huntsman Center promises to be interesting.

The two teams have only played three times since 1988 and the Utes hold a 28-1 overall advantage. The Aggies, much improved this year at 21-9, won their only game against Utah in Logan in 2009.

The Utes are 15-15 overall after dropping their first-round Pac-12 tournament game 55-41 in their last game. This is Utah’s fifth appearance in the WNIT and the Utes are 3-8 in the tournament. Utah last played in 2010, beating St. Mary’s in the first round before falling to eventual WNIT champion California in the second round.

Utah is led by sophomores Michelle Plouffe and Taryn Wicijowski.

The Aggies had one of their finest seasons in years. They are led by all-Western Athletic Conference first-teamers Ashlee Brown and Devyn Christensen.

“Utah State is a quality team,” said Utah head coach Anthyony Levrets. “They have 21 wins. They shoot the basketball very well and have a good inside presence to go along with that. It will be another big challenge for us.”
