Unified police are searching for a man who burglarized a Hindu temple overnight Wednesday, making off with a valuable donation box.
Unified Police Department Lt. Justin Hoyal said the burglar struck about 1:30 a.m., cutting through a screen and then opening the window and climbing inside the Krishna Temple located at 965 E. 3370 South. Once inside, Hoyal said the man began rummaging around.
He said a couple staying inside the temple was awakened by the male burglar after he tried to kick open their locked door. When the caretaker confronted the burglar, the burglar told him he used to live there and had a friend waiting for him out front. When the caretaker went to check the man’s story, the burglar fled, taking with him the donation box, Hoyal said.
Hoyal said it is a “very unique” box.
It is very heavy, made of teakwood and varnished brown with four legs and some decorations on it, Hoyal said.
He said the box alone is valued at about $2,000. The man also made off with whatever donations were inside the locked box, but he said investigators weren’t sure how much money that was.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 801-743-7000.
