Richfield • Not many teams can recover from a scoreless quarter and still win.

But that's exactly what Green River did Wednesday in the first round of the Class 1A boys basketball tournament at the Sevier Valley Center.

The Pirates, who were the Region 19 champions, went scoreless in the second quarter and trailed Valley 20-9 at halftime but used a strong second half to take a 37-35 victory.

Justin Johnson led Green River with 13 points, while Chase and Colby Spencer each had 10 for Valley.

Rich 59, Piute 47: Bracken Pinder and McKay Jarman each scored 15 to lead Rich past Piute in a battle of teams that finished in second place in their regions. Anthony Hardman and Ty Jessen each scored 11 for Valley. Rich will meet Green River at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Layton Christian 74, Panguitch 57: Panguitch became the third Region 20 team to lose in three games as the 1A tournament approached the half-way mark of a marathon first day when eight games are scheduled.

Tabiona 45, Tintic 38: Tabiona, the third place team from Region 21, pulled the day's first upset by knocking off Region 18 champion Tintic. Tabiona will now meet Layton Christian Thursday at 7 p.m. in the championship quarterfinals.
