Richfield • One of the most intense and exciting basketball tournaments of the year opens Wednesday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield when Utah's small 1A schools convene for the annual Class 1A boys tournament.

The tournament began at 10 a.m. with Green River and Valley squaring off. Rich and Piute play at 11:30 a.m. followed by Layton Christian and Panguitch at 1 p.m., Tintic and Tabiona at 2:30 p.m., Wayne against Whitehourse at 4 p.m.,, Intermountain Christian against Liahona at 5:30 p.m., Monticello versus St. Joseph at 7 p.m., and Duchesne versus Bryce Valley at 8:30 p.m.

Region champions include Green River, Layton Christian, Tintic, and Duchesne. There is no defending champion because last year's winner, Wasatch Academy, moved up a classification to 2A.

Another eight games are scheduled Thursday with consolation contests kicking off at 10 a.m. and championship contests scheduled at 4, 5:30, 7 and 8:30 p.m.
