Ahmed Ahmed does not buy the widely held stereotype that Arabs have no sense of humor.
Ahmed, an Egyptian-American stand-up comic and filmmaker, set out to prove his point by traveling to Dubai, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to perform — and capture the reactions of audiences there to what he and his comedian friends (who include “The Marriage Ref’s” Tom Papa and sitcom star Whitney Cummings) had to say.
The result is Ahmed’s directorial debut, the 2010 documentary “Just Like Us,” which will screen Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Dumke Recital Hall of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, 410 Campus Center Drive, on the University of Utah campus, Salt Lake City.
Ahmed will be in attendance, answering questions after the screening.
The screening starts at 7 p.m., and is free to the public. The event is sponsored by LEAP, the Offices of Diversity and Student Affairs, and the College of Fine Arts.
