A woman in her 80s escaped her burning two-story home in Bountiful without injuries Saturday morning.
South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jim Rampton said that just after 9 a.m., the woman, who was the only occupant of the house near 400 North and 400 East, called saying her house was on fire.
“As soon as engines were leaving the station they could see a column of smoke,” Rampton said.
Firefighters arrived and found flames on the first floor, but the majority of the blaze was in the basement. It took about 15 minutes for crews to control the fire.
The woman — who was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene — heard smoke detectors in the house, found the fire in the basement and was able to get out on her own before crews arrived, Rampton said.
The woman has been displaced from the home for the time being and will stay with family in the area, Rampton said.
Investigators believe the electrical fire started in a bedroom in the basement near a power outlet. Damage to the home is estimated at $70,000.
