Report from L.A.'s Grammy Week: 2 SUU Students nominated for Grammy
This morning I talked to Taliah Johnson, a senior at SUU, one of two SUU students who have been nominated for Best Choral Peformance in the Classical Music division for "Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem." The duo were part of the Professional Choral Institute held at the University of South Florida, a two-week program that included recording that CD with acclaimed Florida group Seraphic Fire.Johnson, a senior who plans on graduating with a degree in music education, said she had never heard of the Brahms composition before rehearsing it during the program. And while she knew the recording session was professional, she had no idea it was "Grammy material," she said. She learned of the nomination from Geneil Perkins, her fellow student at SUU, who told her the news in the way most nominees find out these days: a text message in all capital letters. It has been difficult to get ahold of Perkins this week because she is auditioning for a grad school program in Wisconsin all week. She is majoring in vocal performance and is also a senior. Perkins is from Moreno Valley, Calif.Johnson will not be able to attend the ceremony, which will be held before the televised portion on CBS. It will be streamed over the Internet, though, so she will be watching it with her family in Cedar City.Life does go on, though. After all of the anticipation and excitement, Johnson has a class first thing at 8 a.m. Monday morning.
