The dance form made popular in the early ‘80s by hip-hop music with films such as “Wild Style” and “Beat Street” is alive and well.

For real flesh-and-blood proof, consider the Utah Bboy Federation’s annual Break Dancing Battle, now in its third installment. Past competitions spotlighted the best in local break-dance talent, with an impressive menu of footwork and power moves galore including flares, swipes and even head spins.

The Saturday, Jan. 7 kick-off at Murray’s Boys and Girls Club features an official three-men crew competition, with one-on-one battles open to all-comers flexible enough to compete. Each crew will perform a minimum of one routine per “battle,” with eliminations continuing on into future competitions in March and May this year. The best crew judged gets round-trip airfare to the national break-dance battle of choice.

DJ Scratchmo, of Crate Dwellers Crew, provides the soundtrack, with vendors providing refreshment and clothing lines for your complete hip-hop night out.
