Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune Utah Jazz rookie Enes Kanter pushes past Portland's Chris Johnson uring first half action of the Utah Jazz versus Portland Trail Blazers game at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah Wednesday, December 21, 2011.

The day we feared might never arrive is here - the Utah Jazz open the 2011-12 NBA season in Los Angeles against the Lakers (8:30 p.m., TNT).

To make up for lost time - and to squeeze in as many games as possible - this is the first of four games in five nights and six games in eight nights. That's what happens when you have a work stoppage that stretches on for months.

Given the alternative, which would have been no season at all, this lockout-shortened season looks pretty good.

Elsewhere on TV ...

College football: Little Caesar's Bowl - Purdue vs. Western Michigan (2:30 p.m., ESPN); Belk Bowl - Louisville vs. North Carolina State (6 p.m. ESPN)

Men's college basketball (7 p.m., BYUtv): Cal State San Marcos at BYU

The 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors (8 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2): Caroline Kennedy hosts the presentations for this year's honorees - singer Barbara Cook, singer Neil Diamond, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, saxophonist Sonny Rollins and actress Meryl Streep.
