Montana man killed in motorcycle crash near Vernal

A Montana man was killed north of Vernal Saturday after he lost control of his motorcycle. Utah Highway Patrol troopers said David P. Hellrigel, 49, of Bozeman, Mont., was riding southbound about 15 miles north of Vernal on State Road 191 in the area known as the “The Switchbacks” when he failed to negotiate a curve. Montana motorcycle rider dies in eastern Utah crash

A 49-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday after he struck a guardrail about 15 miles north of Vernal. David P. Hellrigel, of Bozeman, Mont., was riding south on U.S. Highway 191 through an area known as “The Switchbacks,” according to the Utah Highway Patrol. About noon, Hellrigel failed to negotiate a turn and was thrown from the motorcycle against the guardrail, UHP said. Hellrigel was wearing a helmet but died before responders arrived.

The Bureau of Land Management is inviting public comment on an environmental assessment released this week concerning a proposal to lease about 2,100 acres in Uintah County for a tar sands mining operation. MCW Energy Group has said it expects to produce 250 barrels a day at the Asphalt Ridge site, a few miles south of Vernal, under an agreement with Temple Mountain Energy Inc., which will supply the ore. Vernal police looking for man who stole donations

Vernal police want the public’s help in finding the man who took a jug filled with Relay for Life donations. A Walgreens surveillance camera shows a man in a flannel shirt and jeans walking out of the store, at 316 U.S. 40, on Saturday with a water jug half-full of money meant for the American Cancer Society’s big fundraiser. Vernal City has posted the picture on their Facebook page in hopes that someone will recognize him. Anyone with information is asked to call Vernal police at 435-789-5835....
