A call about the blaze came in at 2:18 p.m., and firefighters arrived within four minutes, Clinton Deputy Fire Chief Justin Benavides said. Now, they warily watch the horizons for signs of fresh smoke. The Black Crook Creek Fire blackened tinder-dry swaths of grass, sagebrush, pinyon and juniper since being sparked during a thunderstorm on June 29.
