Two Utahns at S. Virginia named All-Academic

Two Utahns who compete for Southern Virginia were recently recognized by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, which announced its 2013 Non-USCAA Sports National All-Academic selections. Among the eight Southern Virginia athletes honored were Timothy Birch, a junior tennis player from Sandy, and Jackie Barlow, a junior from Fruit Heights and member of the women’s lacrosse team.

Former RSL defender Russell retires, heads back to school

Washington • D.C. United defender Robbie Russell has retired after a 13-year career in Major League Soccer and in Europe, and will study medicine at Georgetown University. The 33-year-old Russell scored one goal in 20 appearances with United, which announced his plans Wednesday. He played in 98 games over six seasons in MLS and was a member of the 2009 league champions, Real Salt Lake. Russell also played in Iceland, Norway and Denmark.

New York • Adult Swim says it’s turning Mike Tyson into a cartoon detective. The network announced a new animated series Friday called “Mike Tyson Mysteries” that will feature the retired boxing champ. On the show, a cartoon version of Tyson will solve wacky problems, assisted by a trusty associate: a foul-mouthed pet pigeon. The network said Tyson will voice the animated character, as well as make live-action appearances. The show is targeted for next season, but no premiere date was specified....

The BYU basketball team is getting some much-needed 3-point shooting help, but coach Dave Rose won't be able to enjoy his latest addition until the 2014-15 season. Chase Fischer, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Ripley, West Virginia, who played the last two seasons at Wake Forest, announced Friday night that he is transferring to BYU.
