Utah's gymnastics team can't get much better at home, on the road? Well that is another story. The top-ranked Utes struggled in their 196.15-194.0 win here over Arizona State, as they counted their first fall of the year and didn't look quite as sharp overall as they have in the past.
Senior Kyndal Robarts admitted the Utes weren't quite as up for the meet as they have been in recent ones, particularly last week's win over rival Georgia.
However, Utah coach Greg Marsden noted since nationals aren't at home this year, Utah has to do a better job in environments such as Sunday's.
The announced attendance was just 873, and the atmosphere was far from the electric level it reaches...

The Utes already have a win against Arizona State, an extreme 21-point wipeout that left the home team with a rare feeling of satisfaction.

Why, then, is Utah generally listed as anywhere up to a 13-point underdog.

The Utes' lack of road success is a good reason. Trent Lockett is another.

Utah hasn't won on the road since last February, when Chris Hines hit a 3-pointer to beat New Mexico in The Pit. Lockett, meanwhile, is the ASU guard who hasn't played for four weeks due to an injured ankle. He's expected to play tonight.

The game i...

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott is in town for a couple days for what he is calling a "Front Porch Summit," which is a gathering of school officials from the Pac-12 to discuss athletic and academic issues. Utah is hosting because the Utes volunteered to do so.
Scott, who hopes to get some quality time on Utah's ski slopes once the conference is over, was his usual energized and upbeat self this morning as he med with members of the media.
We have a story up on our website about his visit. But in short, he is looking for ways to 'globalize' the Pac-12. He wants to do it through the Pac-12...

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott along with Utah President-Elect Dr. David Pershing and Utah athletics director Dr. Chris Hill will participate in the Pac-12's first 'Front Porch Leadership Summit.'
Utah is hosting the event, which isn't open to the public or the media. According to a press release from the league, representatives from each school will be on hand to discuss several topics including academic performance, the conference initiatives and league developments such as the Pac-12 networks.
The summit will last two days and will be held at the new Natural History Museum of Utah.

Lothrop also tied for first on the balance beam with a 9.9.
UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa was given the Pac-12 Special Performance of the Week honors for winning the vault and uneven bars with 9.95s in the Bruins' win over Stanford.

Couple of notes on the Utes. There has been some question as to whether quarterback Jordan Wynn, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the fourth game of the year, would be able to receive a medical redshirt.
While the Utes are awaiting official word from the NCAA, school officials are confident that he'll be granted another year and will be a junior in 2012.
The Utes also applied for a medical redshirt for freshman receiver Charles Henderson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against Arizona State.
Like Wynn, the Utes consider it a virtual lock that Henderson will be granted another year.

Speaking of the future, the Utes are hard at work on their re...

In probably one of the smartest but least surprising moves, the Pac-12 Board of Directors voted to Commissioner Larry Scott's contract through 2016 with options to add additional years.
Brought on to give the conference a fresh look since it was sliding behind the others in national exposure, TV deals, etc., Scott has surpassed anyone's expectations in revamping the conference.
Heck, he almost made the idea of playing games in China sound logical.

Utah senior Stephanie McAllister said she can't remember the last time she felt the atmosphere in the Huntsman Center as intense as it was Friday night. That thought probably was shared by many as the top-ranked Utes edged No. 4 Georgia 197.15-196.95.
Credit Utah's season high of 49.5 on the floor for keeping the Gym Dogs from getting the upset. Credit too Utah's young gymnasts who continue to seem unfazed by pressure situations.
The Utes didn't have a fall in the meet and had their best floor rotation when they needed it most.
Watching them compete, one would never know 11 of Utah's 15 gymnasts are freshmen and sophomores.

Aaron Roderick's appointment as Utah's passing game coordinator might last about as long as his stay at Washington did in 2009 when he agreed to be the Huskies' receivers coach, then returned to the Utes after a week.
According to footballscoop.com, Nevada coach Chris Ault plans to interview Roderick to be his offensive coordinator.
On Thursday when the Utes announced Brian Johnson as the Utes' offensive coordinator and Roderick as the passing game coordinator, Roderick didn't try to hide the fact that he wanted to be an offensive coordinator somewhere, but decided to stay with the Utes because he loved Utah as a state. He also f...

It's sunny, clear and dry in Salt Lake City today. But that's not the case in our sister city. Denver is socked in by an impressive snowstorm that is preventing the Oregon Ducks from flying in and, so far, the Oregon State Beavers from getting out.

According to The Oregonian's Lindsay Schnell, the Ducks will try to fly out tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Meanwhile, they will practice once again in Salt Lake City in preparation for tomorrow scheduled game at Colorado. The Utes, too, have a stake in this. Utah is scheduled to play Oregon State tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Brian Johnson isn't sure exactly what kind of offense he wants to run as Utah's coordinator, but he is confident he can run it. It will be a more explosive offense than the Utes had in 2011 when the Utes had to rely on a running game after starting quarterback Jordan Wynn suffered a season-ending shoulder injury too, he says.
Johnson met members of the media for the first time as Utah's coordinator Thursday afternoon.
While the 24-year-old joked he is still too young to rent a car from many companies, he said he is ready to guide the Utes' offense and will use spring ball to devise his schemes.
"We have a ton of talent in the program and we've got some guys who can play a lot...

The Utes this season have played significantly better at home, going 5-5 at the Huntsman Center while losing their other 11 games on the road. At home, their trademark has been defense and grit.

They'll need both tonight against Oregon (16-5, 6-3 Pac-12), a game that they will play in pink sneakers as part of the university's Power of Pink campaign and in loose conjunction with Coach's vs. Cancer (which USC and UCLA honored the national event last week with their coaches wearing sneakers).

The Utes will also warm up in pink t-shirts and the coaching staff will wear pink sneakers. The Utah women's team wore pink uniforms last week in conjunction with the Power of Pink campaig...

In discussing the Utes' recruiting efforts to sign some of the best players in the west, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham used some baseball terminology, saying he liked the 'slugging percentage,' of getting three of the nine to sign.
We'll stick with the baseball terminology in discussing the coach's latest announcement. He either hit it out of the park with his decision to hire Brian Johnson as his offensive coordinator or whiffed, in a big way.
Just a few weeks ago Whittingham was telling reporters he couldn't believe some of the names who had applied for the position and credited Utah's move to the Pac-12 as one of the reasons the Utes were such an attractive program now.

It will be another busy day on the hill for the Utah Utes as they are expected to announce Brian Johnson's hiring as the new offensive coordinator before 9 a.m. today.
Johnson, who has just two years of coaching experience, replaces the 65-year-old Norm Chow, who left after just one season to become the head coach at Hawaii.
While Johnson is one of the least experienced coaches on Utah's staff, Whittingham frequently has spoken highly of the former quarterback's feel for the game.
Still, the hiring would be a surprise, considering Whittingham said he had more than 70 coaches apply for the position.
However, the hiring of Johnson would make for a smooth transition back to ...

The Utes had a few surprises on signing day, but now it appears their biggest could come Thursday.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham will name his new offensive coordinator Thursday and sources say 24-year-old Brian Johnson could be his guy.
Neither Whittingham, nor Johnson or his agent, David Canter, returned phone messages Wednesday.
Johnson, who turns 25 on Feb. 16, already is the youngest full-time coach on Utah's staff. He would replace Norm Chow, who served as Utah's coordinator for one year before taking the head job at Hawaii.
Whittingham often cited the 65-year-old Chow's 38 years of experience as a huge benefit to Utah's program.
While Johnson is one of the least...

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said there were nine players on the Utes' board who they weren't sure if they'd be able to sign or not on Wednesday. Of those, the Utes got lineman Carlos Lozano, corner Alphonso Marsh out of Compton, Calif., and local star defensive end Moana Ofahengaue.
The notable ones they missed out on were corner Brandon Beaver (Washington), defensive lineman Pio Vatuvei (Washington) and corner Raymond Ford (Cal).
But Whittingham, who alluded to the late signings at his press conference, was Ok with the percentage the Utes had, speaking in baseball terms.
"That is a pretty good slugging percentage," he said.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham joked as he put on a pair of glasses to read some of the stats on his newly signed 2012 class.
"It's that time of my life, I guess," he said.
He won't need glasses to see the guys on the field though as the Utes added considerable heft to their lines.
The top get, at least on the scales, was Carlos Lozano, a 6-foot-6, 385-pound offensive lineman out of East Los Angeles College who picked the Utes over Kansas and Washington State.
Other hefty gets of note for the Utes were Visesio "Junior" Salt, a 6-2, 340-pound defensive lineman from Glendale, Utah, who originally committed to Florida but decided he wanted to play closer to home. Offensive l...

Short update while we are waiting on the announcement of the last few players on Utah's board. The ones remaining of particular interest are Moana Ofahengaue, a linebacker out of Lehi, Alphonso Marsh, a corner out of Dominquez H.S. in Compton, Calif., and Raymond Ford, a corner out of Gardena, Calif.
All of them will make their announcements later today.
Word is the Utes feel Marsh and Ofahengaue are solid for them, but even without those signatures Utah has done well.
Utah's class has been ranked in about the middle of the Pac-12, which might be a nice thing to brag about, but anyone who follows college football well enough knows rankings mean little. It's what the guys do wh...

Utah's ability to hang onto most of their early commitments get top players such as Lutui is one of the reasons Utah is projected to have a strong class, said Brandon Huffman, the West Regional Recruiting Manager for FOX Sports/Scout.com. If you are a football fan who likes to believe in stars and ratings before a player has even put on a uniform, then the predictions for Utah's 2012 recruiting class have to get you excited.
Judging on the ratings of the players on Utah's commitment list, the Utes should haul in one of their better recruiting classes and have held their own against the Pac-12.
The Utes were ranked No. 28 by Rivals.com nationally, just a notch behind Cal. Other Pac-12 teams ahead of the Utes were USC (No. 11), UCLA (No. 13), Stanford (No. 16), Oregon (No. 17) and Washington (No. 23).

The Utah Utes got some big news Monday night as Hiva Lutui, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound lineman out of Trinity H.S. in Euless, Texas committed to the Utes. Lutui had offers from USC and UCLA.
Lutui was a highly sought-after recruit known for his solid play. He'll likely play at guard or center for the Utes.
Trinity H.S. also produced current Utes and defensive linemen LT Tuipulotu and Seni Fauonuku. Fauonuku played for Trinity before transferring to Bingham.
Lutui said Tuipulotu and his cousin, Tauni Vakapuna, helped recruit him to Utah, but ultimately it was recruiting coordinator Morgan Scalley and a recent visit from coach Kyle Whittingham that really made his decision an eas...

Utah's recruiting class is nearing completion with just a few days to go before signing day.

But who will be coaching the newly signed offensive players remains a mystery.

Former BYU coach Gary Crowton, who was among those who interviewed for the job, has joined the staff of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.

Other coaches who were thought to be candidates have also taken jobs elsewhere, including former CSU coach Steve Fairchild (San Diego Chargers) and Dirk Koetter (Atlanta Falcons).

One possible candidate still available who has great familiarity with the position is Aaron Roderick.

Between Los Angeles and Long Beach • While the Utes and Trojans battled it out for the bottom of the Pac-12 (and, as it were, not much of a battle of that), the Pac-12 got a new leader. Washington beat Arizona to move half a game ahead of Cal and Oregon, who play rivalry games today with chances to keep up.

In a sport defined by tenths of points, Utah's gymnastics team knows reaching the big mark of 197 is saying something.

That they've reached that mark two meets in a row is sending the message loud and clear — the Utes believe they have what it takes to win a national title in 2012.

What was most impressive about Utah's 197.55-194.45 win over the BYU Cougars Friday was how effortless the Utes seemed in reaching the score.

The key point came when Nansy Damianova fell off the uneven bars as the second gymnast in the lineup. Instead of allowing the fall to lead to other mistakes, Utah's gymnasts responded with four straight 9.9s.

That is the kind of performance tha...

Losing to Utah in the Pac-12 can only mean one thing for an opponent.

"If this is not (rock bottom), I don't know what is," Arizona State wing Carrick Felix said after the Sun Devils' 64-43 loss Saturday.

It may sound harsh, but given the Utes' litany of struggles this season, including dismissing point guard Josh Watkins this week, it's understandable. There was a time it was questionable whether the Utes would ever win a game. Now they have two in the Pac-12. In the aftermath of Saturday's victory,

There continues to be something to this idea that Pac-12 teams can't perform on the road. The conference's best team — which I think we can safely say now — is Cal, and the Golden Bears squeaked by Washington by three on the road last night, while Stanford (5-2) lost in Pullman against Washington State (2-4).

After Thursday, Pac-12 teams are 27-11 at home. The Utes are 1-2 in Pac-12 home games, but have a chance to even that Saturday against Arizona State, which lost 69-54 at Colorado Thursday.

For several seasons now Utah's gymnastics team has had what coach Greg Marsden calls a 'ceiling.' No matter what his team did, the Utes just didn't have enough big scores to compete with the top one or two teams unless those teams self-imploded.
The ceiling is off this year. The Utes easily beat Utah State 197.4-191.925 Friday, but more exciting than the meet itself was the potential the team showed. From the freshmen to the seniors, the Utes delivered one big score after another one.
