Large, vibrant paintings by Latina artists on exhibit in Ogden

Large-scale colorful paintings by Salt Lake City artists Ruby Chacon and Kim Martinez are on display through Oct. 21 at Universe City, 2556 Washington Blvd., Ogden. Both women examine their Latina heritage through their artwork. The exhibit is scheduled to coincide with the 16th conference of the International Association of Hispanic Women Writers at nearby Weber State University. Universe City is open Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m. and by appointment by calling 801-458-8959.

Westminster show: An exhibition of works by the Westminster College Student Artists Guild opens Monday in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory on the Westminster campus, 1250 E. 1700 South, Salt Lake City. The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 22. For more information, call 801-832-2457.

Tony talks: On Tuesday at 3 p.m., the Salt Lake Art Center will host a free public discussion with esteemed Utah painter Tony Smith in conjunction with the center's retrospective, "Looking Back: 75 Years at the Salt Lake Art Center." Coffee and cookies will be served. During the informal dialogue, Smith is expected to discuss his favorite artists and their impact on his work. The center is at 20 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City. Watercolor demo: Nationally acclaimed watercolor artist Judy Morris will offer a lecture and demonstration Tuesday at the combined meeting of the Utah Watercolor Society and the Intermountain Society of Artists. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Wheeler Historic Farm, 6359 S. 900 East, Murray, and the public is welcome. Bountiful art stroll: Four neighboring artists will open their studios to the public Thursday through Saturday for a Mueller Park Art Stroll in Bountiful's scenic Millstream Canyon. Visitors can view artworks in pen and ink, intaglio, watercolor, acrylic and oils at the studios of Anne Marie and Garth Oborn, 987 E. Millstream Way; Michael Gaffney, 1033 E. Millstream Way; Janet Clark, 1117 E. 1500 South; and Penny Bohn, 1157 E. 1500 South. Stroll hours are Thursday and Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. Artworks will be available for purchase.

New gallery in town: The public is invited to the grand opening of the new 21st Street Gallery, Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Rockwood Art Building, 1064 E. 2100 South, Salt Lake City. The small gallery currently features artwork by seven women in watercolors, collage, acrylics, photography and fine furniture. After the opening receptions, the gallery will be open by appointment and on weekends during the holiday season.

Make a monotype: Nancy Swanson and Joy Nunn will introduce guests to the creation of simple monotypes, Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Art at the Main, 210 E. 400 South in the Salt Lake City Main Library.
