Trial set for driver in canyon truck explosion

A July 20 jury trial has been set in Provo's 4th District Court for a truck driver who rolled an explosives-laden semitrailer truck in Spanish Fork Canyon last summer, causing a huge explosion. Travis Stewart, 31, of Idaho, is charged with misdemeanor counts of causing a catastrophe, reckless endangerment and reckless driving in connection with the Aug. 10 mishap, which blew a 30-by-70-foot crater in U.S. Highway 6. At least 20 people went to the hospital with shrapnel wounds and eardrum injuries.

Teacher pleads no contest in teen sex abuse case

A San Rafael Junior High School teacher accused of having sex with a 15-year-old male student has pleaded no contest to one count of attempted forcible sexual abuse. Brandy L. Yates, 29, of Ferron, Emery County, faces up to five years in prison when she is sentenced July 18 by 7th District Judge Bruce Halliday.

Man says he was shot outside convenience store

An 18-year-old man told police he was shot in the foot early Wednesday as he was walking away from a 7-Eleven on California Avenue (1280 South) and Emery Street (1170 West). His mother, who drove him to the hospital, saw an officer at 400 South and stopped for assistance, according to Salt Lake City police. Investigators did not locate a blood trail where the man says he was shot, but they found blood on the front porch of his residence.

Armed robbers grab cash and phone cards

Four men - one armed with a shotgun and another with a bat - robbed a Quick Stop convenience store early Wednesday at 910 N. 900 West. Two of the men detained one store clerk, while a third man detained a second clerk. The fourth man took cash from the register and grabbed phone cards. Salt Lake City police said one of the men broke out the TV monitor in the back room. All four left fled south on foot.

Springdale police arrest suspected sex abuser

Springdale police on Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of three counts of sexual abuse of a child. Angela Camarena, of Virgin, was booked into the Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane in lieu of $30,000 bail and on an immigration hold, said Police Chief Kurt Wright. The police department began its investigation of Camarena, who allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl, on April 14.

Woman sentenced in pedestrian's death

A woman charged with killing a pedestrian two years ago in Salt Lake County while allegedly under the influence of several prescription drugs, has been sentenced to one year in jail and fined $2,525. Angela McGuire, 33, of West Jordan, was charged with third-degree felony automobile homicide for the Aug. 4, 2004, death of John Shoemaker. She pleaded guilty in 3rd District Court to a lesser charge of class A misdemeanor negligent homicide.

Man who shot neighbor in feud is sentenced

A mentally ill West Valley City man who shot and wounded a neighbor because of a long-term dispute, has been sentenced to one year in jail. Andrew Liam Reynolds, 21, pleaded guilty and mentally ill to second-degree felony aggravated assault for shooting the victim three times on Oct. 16, 2003. In addition to jail time, 3rd District Judge Paul Maughan fined Reynolds $1,500, ordered mental health and anger management counseling and restitution of $26,222.

Man heads to prison for drug-deal stabbing

A Salt Lake City man who last year stabbed another man five times with a pocket knife during a drug deal has been sentenced to prison for up to five years. Franklin Bob Montag, 27, was charged in 3rd District Court with attempted murder and drug possession but pleaded guilty to third-degree felony aggravated assault.
