Ute football: Louks takes a seat with concussion

Ute quarterback Corbin Louks' strong spring session has come to an abrupt end after he was diagnosed with a concussion, resulting from a hit in Friday's scrimmage.

Louks will miss the remaining two practices and the Utes' Red-White game on Saturday.

On Friday, Louks rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. He was also the unfortunate star of a highlight hit when Deshawn Richard knocked him out of bounds.

Afterward, Louks said he felt like he had a concussion, and further exams proved he was right.

Louks was having a standout spring and often overshadowed predicted starter Brian Johnson, whose shoulder still is recovering from surgery.

His accuracy has suffered, but Ute coaches believe Johnson should be 100 percent by August.

Louks' absence on Saturday probably means more snaps will be split between Johnson, Chad Manis and DeVonte Christopher.

This week

The Utes will practice from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, a no-tackle day, and will have a short run-through on Friday. The Red-White game will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and will feature 12-minute quarters in the first half and 10-minute quarters in the second half. A running clock will be used in the second half.

Admission and parking is free. The Utes will sign autographs after the game, approximately at 2:15 p.m.

How much is good enough?

In judging whether an offense is successful or not, Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig says he has one main standard - "if we finish with one more point than our opponent," he said.

However, he did admit Utah's offense needs more production. The Utes averaged 26.2 points in 2007, ranking them 68th in scoring offense.

"I want to say 32 points, that is usually going to get you a win and you are 37th in the country or so," he said. "But I'm not big into this goal or that goal, it doesn't matter if you lose."

Bowl picture

Navy lost it's tie with the Poinsettia Bowl for 2008 and 2009, but has signed an agreement with bowl organizers to return in 2010, as long as it is eligible. For 2008, the bowl will feature a MWC team against the seventh place team from the Pac-10 and in 2009 the 6th place team from the Pac-10.

Utah made its first appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl last year, defeating Navy 35-32.
