With that, Mendenhall agreed to terms Wednesday that will extend his contract through the 2011 season.
"Bronco has done a tremendous job of re-establishing BYU's tradition of football excellence, and leading the program back to national prominence," athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a release.
Entering his third season, Mendenhall has guided the Cougars to a 17-8 record.
He posted an 11-2 record last season, winning the Mountain West Conference with an 8-0 record. The Cougars capped off the season by beating Oregon 38-8 in the Las Vegas Bowl, BYU's first bowl win since 1996.
In his first year, he complied a 6-5 regular-season record, giving BYU its first winning season since the 2001.
Mendenhall won the MWC Coach of the Year award last season.
