Behind career nights from red-shirt freshman Banna Diop and junior Stacey Howard, the USU women's basketball team rebounded from a loss with a convincing 71-34 win over Montana Western at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, USU improves to 3-1 overall. This team is the fastest to three wins since the 1978-79 squad that won its first five games. The game was an exhibition for the NAIA's Montana Western who hold with a 4-6 record.
Diop scored a career-high 13 points, while junior guard Amber White led all scorers with 16 points. White has now scored in double figures in three of the Aggies' four games. Several other Aggies had career scoring nights, including senior guard TaHara Williams (6) and junior guard LaCale Pringle-Buchanan (7).
UVU 68, SUU 54 » Julie Smith scored 26 points and Erika Newbold added career highs of 10 points and eight rebounds as Utah Valley topped Southern Utah at the Wingate Thanksgiving Classic at Montana State University on Saturday. Smith scored 18 of her points in the first half and was named to the all tournament team after averaging 21.0 points in two games.
The Wolverines (3-5) used their defense to both slow the T-Birds (0-6) and create opportunities on the offensive end in the first half. UVU jumped out a 7-0 lead before SUU finally scored at the 14:35 mark on the way to snapping a four-game losing streak.

Four Bruins reached double figures led by Haley Holmstead's 21 points and seven rebounds. Off the bench Mina Jovanovic was a perfect 6-6 from the floor to finish with 14 points along with Jami Mokofisi's 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting. Kelsey Sparkman scored 12 and Allie Blake had 10 boards to go along with seven points.
No. 3 SLCC (9-1, 4-0 SWAC) takes their nine game winning streak on the road as they head to Powell, Wyoming for the Northwest Powell tournament December 4-5.
Westminster 74, Northwest 55 » The Westminster women's basketball team won its second consecutive game on Saturday night, this time a defeat of Northwest (Wash.) at the Evergreen State Thanksgiving Tournament.
Westminster started the game strong and carried a 39-24 lead into halftime. The win improves the Griffins to 6-4 on the year and drops Northwest to 3-3.
Nicole Yazzie led Westminster with 25 points off the bench. Yazzie shot 8-of-12 from the floor and connected twice from beyond the arc.
McKenzie Jessop scored just five points, but had eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Keshia Catten added 15 points.
Next for Westminster is a Thursday night game against Northern New
Mexico in the Behnken Field House. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is the first of three games in three days for the Griffins.
