Poor shooting late in the game doomed the Utah women's basketball team against UNLV, as the Utes suffered their second conference loss of the season, 68-55 to the Rebels on Wednesday in Las Vegas.
Down 46-40 with 7:52 left, UNLV's Jamie Smith started a 20-2 run with a layup and ended with a 58-48 lead with 1:50 remaining in the game. Foul shooting down the stretch helped UNLV pull away in the final minutes.
Foul trouble also hurt Utah (18-8, 11-2 MWC), with Morgan Warburton, Kalee Whipple and Hannah Stephens each playing several minutes with four fouls and fouling out by the end of the game.
The Utes shot 32.6-percent (18-of-55) in the contest, their lowest shooting percentage of the year.
With the score tied at halftime, 27-27, the Utes put together an 11-2 run over the first 5:30 of the second half to take a 38-29 lead. Warburton had four points of that run to lead Utah.
UNLV (11-16, 4-10 MWC) continued to fight, and although Utah pulled out to leads of as many as eight points, the Rebels tied the game at 48-48 with five minutes remaining and took the lead for the first time in the second half, 50-48, shortly after.
Warburton led Utah with 21 points while Katie King added 12 points.
San Diego State 59, BYU 47 » In Provo, Mindy Nielson, Jenteal Jackson and Keilani Moeaki scored six points each to lead BYU (17-8 overall, 7-6 MWC) in the loss.
Jene Morris scored a game-high 16 points for the Aztecs (16-6, 10-3).
Swimming and diving
In Oklahoma City, BYU won its first Mountain West women's 200-yard medley relay since 2001, touching the wall in 1:41.22 on the first day of the conference meet. Candice Smith, Sara Jayne Christiansen, Kirsty Ferrell and Aleesha Miller won the relay, one-tenth of a second off of breaking the school record (1:41.22).
BYU's Ron Morris won the 1-meter diving competition (331.65).
The Air Force men's and Wyoming women's swimming and diving teams led the competition with 100 and 109 points, respectively, after the first day of the meet. TCU is second for the men with 86 points, while Utah and BYU are tied for second in the women's competition with 75.
