Utah gymnastics: DiLuzio excels as floor anchor
Normally the final spot in the floor lineup is reserved for a senior at Utah. It's a position of honor of sorts to finish Utah's competition.
So why is junior Annie DiLuzio anchoring the floor lineup for the top-ranked Utes instead of seniors Kristina Baskett or Nina Kim ? For flexibility reasons -- and we aren't talking about how easily DiLuzio can touch her toes.
The Utes like putting DiLuzio last so that she can decide to end her first pass with a triple twist, which is easier for her, or the trickier double arabian. If the Utes have had troubles or she isn't feeling on her game, she'll opt for the twist.
So far, she has done both equally and is excelling as the anchor, earning a national ranking of No. 5 with a 9.875 average.
"I love being the anchor," DiLuzio said. "It's an important position and some meets there is more pressure than others, but it's cool to choose which routine I'm more comfortable with doing."
Utah coach Greg Marsden said he was pleased with how DiLuzio has grown into the role and plans to leave her in the position.
"She is doing a good job," he said. "If everything was equal we'd have Kris there as a senior, but it's working to our advantage."
Inside the rankings
The latest rankings mark the switch to the regional qualifying score, which will be used to rank teams for the rest of the season. The RQS is derived by taking six high scores, three of which must be road meets, tossing out the high score and averaging the remaining five scores. Utah maintained its spot at No. 1 with a 196.78 average, followed by Georgia (196.63) and UCLA (196.33).
Baskett is ranked No. 3 in the all-around (39.41) and Jamie Deetscreek is No. 10 (39.28). Baskett is ranked No. 1 in the vault (9.92), second on the uneven bars (9.92) and seventh on the floor (9.87). Daria Bijak is No. 4 on the bars (9.89) and Kim is No. 4 on the balance beam (9.875). Deetscreek is tied for ninth on the beam (9.85).
