Utah's annual homage to its pioneer heritage will feature fireworks, powwows, music, parades, a marathon - and traffic disruptions.
Here's a list of holiday activities; refer to the route maps (see attached pdf) for traffic restrictions and road closures.
BOUNTIFUL HANDCART DAYS
This city begins celebrating at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday with food, games and entertainment at the city park, 150 W. 600 North. A parade begins at 6 p.m. at 1500 South, then travels to 400 North and ends at the park. Fireworks are at 10 p.m. at the park. On Thursday, the city hosts a free family swim from 8-10 a.m. at the park with games, prizes and entertainment that continues until 9:30 p.m.
DAYS OF '47
Utah's biggest Pioneer Day began with the Days of '47 Rodeo, which continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday and has a final performance at 4 p.m. on Thursday at EnergySolutions Arena, 301 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Consistently voted in the top five rodeos in the nation by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the event features saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing and clowns. * The Days of '47 marathon begins at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at the top of Big Mountain above Emigration Canyon, while the 10K run starts at 6 a.m. at Research Park on the University of Utah campus.
* The travails of Mormon pioneers will be remembered at a religious service at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Tabernacle on Temple Square, 50 W. South Temple. Keynote speaker is Elder Earl C. Tingey of the Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Free.
* The Days of '47 Parade begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at South Temple and Main Street, Salt Lake City. As one of the largest and oldest parades in America, expect to see colorful floats, horses, bands, clowns, marching bands and more. A limited number of bleacher seats are available through the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum; call 801-532-6479.
* Pioneer Heritage Days is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, at This Is the Place Heritage Park, 2601 E. Sunnyside Ave., Salt Lake City. Enjoy minitrain rides, pioneer arts and crafts, a pet farm, pony rides and more. Tickets are $8, $6 for kids and seniors. Call 801-582-1847.
* The Osmond Family and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Conference Center, 15 E. North Temple, Salt Lake City. Free tickets have already been distributed but any available tickets will be distributed to a standby line at the center's north door. The concert also will be broadcast live Saturday on KBYU Channel 11.
NATIVE AMERICAN CELEBRATION
This annual event, which begins at 9 a.m. at Liberty Park, 500 East and 900 South, Salt Lake City, features traditional dancing and two intertribal powwows, and ends with a fireworks display at 10 p.m. Admission is $4, free for children under 6 and seniors 65 and older. SAMOAN CULTURAL CELEBRATION
This weeklong celebration continues through Saturday at Wheeler Historic Farm, 6351 S. 900 East, Murray. The festival is free; entertainment begins at 4 p.m. Thursday, 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Miss Samoa USA pageant is at Salt Lake Community College, 1575 S. State St., Salt Lake City, from 6-10 p.m.
COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS
Butlerville Days is from 4-10 p.m. Thursday at Butler Park, 7500 S. 2700 East, Cottonwood Heights. The parade begins at 4 p.m. on Fort Union Boulevard, continuing south on 2700 East and ending at Guthrie Skate Park on Bengal Boulevard. Activities at the park include a pie-eating contest, carnival rides, face painting concessions and more. At dusk, there will be a fireworks show. OGDEN PIONEER DAYS
Ogden celebrates with a rodeo at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, at Pioneer Stadium, 668 17th St., Ogden. Tickets are $10-$12, $3-$6 for kids, available by calling 801-629-8217. A fireworks display is Thursday after the rodeo.
Also on Thursday, a free parade starts at 9 a.m. on 31st Street and travels north on Washington Boulevard, ending on 20th Street. There will be marching bands, floats, horse-drawn carriages, antique cars and more.
LAGOON FIREWORKS
Lagoon will hold a large fireworks show at 10 p.m. Thursday at the park, 375 N. Lagoon Drive, Farmington. This year, there will be more than 800 firework shells choreographed to music. For details, call Dick Andrew at 801-451-8062.
HANDCART PAGEANT
Juab County's Mormon Handcart Pageant is today through Saturday at the Fairground Arena, 350 W. Center St., Nephi. The theatrical re-enactment of the Mormon pioneers' journey to Utah will take place each night at 9:15 p.m. Other activities begin at 6:30 p.m., and include a chuckwagon supper for $9, $6 for kids, pioneer storytelling, history displays, musical entertainment and a handcart art show by Julie Rogers.
