Three weeks after graduating from Park City High School, Christopher Yeates was enjoying the kind of European trip teenagers dream about.

He visited Germany and Poland; Italy and France were yet to come, but first there was a stop in Austria. Yeates' trip ended there when he slipped and fell during a hike. He died Monday.

The accident happened near the southern village of Heiligenblut. Authorities said Yeates, 18, fell about 80 feet into a stream bed and hit a rock.

Yeates' mother, Kelly Yeates, said her son graduated June 6 and joined other Park City High students and teachers on the European trip. Kelly Yeates said she had been told the group was on an 8-mile hike on an Austrian mountain when they encountered a steep slope with a cable installed for support.

"The kids said he lost his footing and couldn't grab on fast enough and he went over," Kelly Yeates said. She is an English teacher at Park City High.

Kelly Yeates said the trip was not considered school-sponsored, though some of the teachers helped to organize it.
