Daniel Rodriguez, 36, of Hooper, had pleaded guilty in 2nd District Court to second-degree felony automobile homicide for the July 1, 2007, death of 17-year-old John A. Edwards, of Roy.
Edwards was a back-seat passenger in a car that was stopped for a traffic light on 31st Street in Ogden when, shortly after midnight, Rodriguez slammed into the rear of the car with his three-quarter-ton pickup truck.
Three other teens in the car were injured: driver Keltsey Miller, 16, front-seat passenger Mikell Bennion, 16, and back-seat passenger Colt Hampton.
A prosecution expert estimated the truck was going at least 63 mph at impact, said Deputy Weber County Attorney Christopher Shaw.
Rodriguez left the scene, but a witness followed him to a home, where police found him passed out in the bathroom, Shaw said.
A blood test showed Rodriguez had a blood-alcohol level of 0.17, more than twice Utah's legal limit of 0.08, Shaw said.
In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed misdemeanor charges of failure to remain at the scene of an accident and driving on alcohol restrictions.
In August 2005, Rodriguez was arrested for driving drunk in downtown Ogden. He pleaded guilty to alcohol-related reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor, and was fined and ordered to complete alcohol counseling. He successfully completed a nine-month probation.
