Posted: 9:32 PM- PROVO -- Brigham Young University's football program received its sixth oral commitment from a member of the class of 2009 on Saturday, drawing a pledge from Northridge High running back Peni Maka'afi.

"They offered me after their 7 on 7 camp today, and I committed," Maka'afi told The Salt Lake Tribune. "I have been talking to them for awhile, but I was pretty shocked they offered. I guess I had a pretty good day."

The Cougars also offered Northridge safety Chris Washington, his father, Tony, confirmed. However, Washington wants to participate in camps at Utah and Cal before making his college decision, said his high school coach, Erik Thompson.

Bingham beat Northridge in the championship game of the 7 on 7 tournament.

Maka'afi, 5-foot-11, 215 pounds, also had an offer from Utah State, and Oregon and Boise State were showing interest. He rushed for 890 yards and 13 touchdowns for Northridge last fall, and also had more than 400 receiving yards.

"He's always wanted to be a Cougar," Thompson said. "He has always said he would rather go there than Oregon or Arizona State or any other Pac-10 school."

Washington, 6-foot-2, 195, rates three stars from Scout.com. The offer from BYU was his first, Thompson said.

BYU also has commitments from Kahuku, Hawaii, safety Jray Galea'i, Snow Canyon running back Adam Timo, Timpview safety Craig Bills, Timpview lineman Tui Crichton and Ponderosa, Colo., center Terry Alletto.
