Ron Mortensen as a state senator would be a big step backward for Davis County and for Utah. Mortensen was executive director of the secretive Conservative Caucus, which pushed the voucher fiasco on us. He was spokesman for the right-wing Sutherland Institute, which calls dedication to neighborhood schools "sick idol worship" and would turn our schools into a "last resort" for the poor.

Mortensen's obsession with undocumented workers amounts to persecution. He would eliminate their ability to work, to drive, to go to school. He is blind to the economic reality that local businesses and farmers depend on them. There is neither compassion nor realism in Mortensen's hostility toward them.

Mortensen wants to block our local community from doing what we want. He loudly opposes the South Davis Recreation Center and theater, which we approved at the polls. With Mortensen we would have no beautiful recreation center because of his "signed pledge" to oppose "any and all efforts to increase taxes."

Mortensen is a scary right-wing ideologue in the mold of Chris Buttars or Gayle Ruzicka. Such a candidate doesn't represent the good people of Bountiful and hopefully never will.
