Outdoor notebook: Learn, learn, learn to row at the Great Salt Lake

National Learn to Row Day is at the Great Salt Lake Marina on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, sponsored by Great Salt Lake Rowing, US Rowing and Concept2, gives participants hands-on ergometer lessons, on-the-water rowing experience, training and information on year-round rowing. The event is free. Wear suitable recreational clothing and bring lots of water. Contact Erika Duross at 801-641-3848 for more information.

Trailhead security

The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, is increasing education and surveillance at all parking lots, trailheads and recreation sites. The Sheriff's Office says visitors can help by not leaving valuable property or personal identification in their vehicles and encourages the public to help by reporting suspicious activity to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, 801-743-7000.

Junior Ranger program

The Nature Center at Rock Cliff Recreation area is hosting a Junior Ranger program for children on Saturday at 11 a.m. Children will learn about fish in the area, make a T-shirt, play games and earn their badge. Call the Nature Center at 435-782-3030 to reserve a spot. The day use fee is $7. Free to Utah State Park pass holders.

Wetlands and fields

The Great Salt Lake Audubon is hosting a trip to check out wildlife at the Jordanelle wetlands and Heber fields on June 14 at 7:30 a.m. Bring your own lunch and water and prepare for a cool morning and warm afternoon. The group will leave from the Sugar House ShopKo parking lot promptly at 7:30 a.m. Call Geoff Hardies at 801-953-7829 if you plan to attend.

Fathers Day casting clinic

RoundRocks fly shop, 530 S. Main St., Logan, is holding its first-ever casting clinic on June 14 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants well get free hands-on instruction and casting tips. Casting contests will also be held.

Nature art for kids

and grandparents

The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, 2155 W. Forest St., Brigham City, is giving instruction on nature art for children, ages 10 and older, and their grandparents on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Local wildlife artist Michael Calles will introduce children to capturing wildlife and nature on paper. Those in attendance can learn the life stories of the refuge wildlife through art. The class is free and will be held on Tuesday, June 17 and June 24, but space is limited. Call Kathi Stopher at 435-734-6438 to register.

Free REI clinics

The popular GPS 101 clinic is tonight at 7 at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek. REI navigation expert Paul Vernon will provide an introduction to the GPS system, types of GPS receivers, and basic GPS functions.

The Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South, is holding a basic bike maintenance clinic tonight. REI shop techs will lead participants on the best ways to maintain road and mountain bikes.

Wildlife ecologist and sculptor George Bumann and Yellowstone Association Institute program manager Jenny Golding will lead a multimedia clinic on trip planning in Yellowstone National Park Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store.
