Students leaving Salt Lake City's East High School at the end of school Tuesday were directed through the building's north exit so they would not disturb a bomb squad investigating a suspicious package reported across the street from the school at a Tesoro station at 877 S. 1300 East. A woman had placed a heavy Nabisco cracker tin in the driveway about noon and left. Witnesses reported it as suspicious, but a bomb squad discovered the tin was filled only with rocks. Salt Lake City police were searching for the woman Tuesday night, said Lt. C.T. Smith. Salt Lake City School District spokesman Jason Olsen said students left school without incident while investigators completed their work at the station. Traffic was flowing as normal around the school by 2:45 p.m.
