The Salt Lake Tribune unearthed the cover-up from public records, company correspondence and the recollections of Kennecott executives and neighboring residents. A 1997 memo on Kennecott letterhead details some of the internal deliberations, based on results of an investigation by then-Chief Legal Officer Ray D. Gardner for former President and CEO Bruce D. Farmer. Reporter Judy Fahys researched this story for nearly three months, with the help of reporters Jeremiah Stettler and Steven Oberbeck. They compiled a sizable collection of documents, reports and analyses and wrote the stories you see today. The graphics were produced by Art Director Todd Adams and graphic artists Amy Lewis and Mike Miller. Photographer Francisco Kjolseth produced the images.
