The hit Fox reality-TV show "So You Think You Can Dance?," in which dancers strut, boogie and twist their way into American living rooms for the crown of top hoofer, is coming to Salt Lake City for the first time to audition contestants.
"We haven't been there before - with '[American] Idol' or with 'Dance' - and we like to try and go to as many fresh places that we can," said the show's executive producer and co-judge, Nigel Lythgoe, who also produces "American Idol." "And it appears they [in Utah] turn out dancers. Obviously there's a love of music."
In the show's third season last summer, Roy resident Sabra Johnson, who was then 20, took the crown of top dancer and won $250,000. The season before, Orem's Allison Holker was in the top 10 of the dance competition series.
First, an open audition will be held Monday beginning at 8 a.m. at the Capitol Theater, 50 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City, for anyone from the ages of 18 to 30. Producers ask that people arrive early.
Those who make the first cut will be called back on Wednesday at 9 a.m. At that time, they will perform in front of judges Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and Mandy Moore (the choreographer, not the singer).
The auditions are for the upcoming season of "Dance," which begins in the second half of May right after the end of "American Idol."
