GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- An upbeat Mitt Romney predicted a victory in today's Michigan primary, a claim underscored by a new poll showing him leading the GOP presidential field in the Rust Belt state.

"We're going to do it today, let me tell you," Romney told about 100 cheering supporters inside a warehouse-turned-campaign-stage in Grand Rapids. "We're going to do it."

Romney, who is harkening voters back to the days when his father, George Romney, served as head of an auto company and three terms as governor, is up 6 percentage points over his closest rival, Sen. John McCain, according to a tracking poll by Mitchell Interactive of likely GOP primary voters. That poll puts him up 12 points from several days ago when McCain held the front-runner spot.

"I think Michigan is going to vote for a Romney again," Romney said.

In an unusual mood, Romney appeared confident and comfortable before the audience, even joking with his wife on stage. "Mess up the hair, will ya?" he quipped. "Go ahead."

Polls opened at 7 a.m. EDT this morning and close at 8 p.m.
