What his parents think of the place this weekend will go a long way toward determining whether or not the Cougars land one of their most prized recruits in this year's class.
"I've been up there before," Chambers, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver said Monday. "This is for my parents to see how it is up there and what it is like."
Chambers said his best friend and teammate, 5-9 running back and defensive back Kedron Paul, wants to visit as well. It is not certain whether that will happen.
The two are selling themselves as a package deal, although Chambers is more highly recruited, with reported offers from BYU, Purdue and Florida, among others.
"They [BYU] have offered both of us, but Kedron has to get one class done and then he'll be fine," Chambers said. "We both have to get our [college entrance] test scores up a little bit to get in. Personally, I'm fine for Purdue, but I need to get them higher for BYU and Florida."
They will re-take the ACT (test) in two weeks and the SAT in three weeks, said Chambers, who had 38 receptions for more than 900 yards and 11 touchdowns last fall. Paul led Harmony High - coached by former BYU receiver Tyler Anderson - in rushing with 730 yards and scored a total of 13 touchdowns.
The teammates are expected to be part of a group of at least 20 recruits that BYU will entertain this weekend, the biggest recruiting weekend of the year.
Along with Chambers, the Cougars will also focus on Hamani Stevens, a 6-2, 290-pound offensive center from Hemet High in California who told The Tribune on Monday that he has narrowed his choices to Oregon, Arizona State and BYU and will visit BYU this weekend.
"I've been [to Provo] before, back when my brother played for BYU," Stevens said. "I just want to get to know the coaching staff and all that, see what they're all about."
Aggies update
Having signed four junior college football standouts in December, Utah State is still looking for more immediate help from the juco ranks, a source confirmed. The Aggies are looking at another defensive lineman and a wide receiver with speed to help replace Kevin Robinson.
Coach Brent Guy's club will entertain about 12 players in the next three weekends.
Utes look to Hawaii
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham will have a big group of recruits on campus starting Jan. 18. Most of those prospects already have committed, but the group is expected to include several players who have not made pledges, including highly touted offensive lineman Benji Kemoeatu of Kahuku High in Hawaii and his teammate Paipai Falemalu, a linebacker-defensive end. The Utes have 14 known commitments, including a junior college star (defensive back Lamar Chapman) who signed in December.
