Posted: 9:00 PM- Wind gusts reaching 100 mph in some areas tore through Tooele and the Salt Lake valleys today, knocking out power to thousands of people and carrying fresh snow that brought increased avalanche danger.

Just under 1,000 people remained without power tonight, according to Rocky Mountain Power, which braced for a second round of wintry weather today.

The Utah Department of Transportation closed the road leading up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Snowbird and Alta from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to perform avalanche control. An avalanche near the Brian Head ski resort in Cedar City closed State Road 14 for an hour as crews cleaned up.

A large afternoon avalanche in an out-of-bounds area of Brighton ski resort broke free close to where skiers had jumped ropes to cut tracks, said Bruce Tremper of the Utah Avalanche Center. The avalanche was 4 to 5 feet deep and 200 feet wide, Tremper said. No one was reported caught in the slide.

The storm toppled 18 transmission poles south of Tooele, knocking out power to 300 Stockton residents. Winds lowered seven poles were between Stansbury and Tooele, according to Rocky Mountain Power.

"If we get another storm cell over the area, we may be dealing with power outages through the weekend," Rocky Mountain Power spokesman Dave Eskelsen said.

Tooele Mayor Patrick Dunlavy said police and fire crews stood ready for evacuations throughout the day but were not needed.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to 100 wrecks and a dozen slide-offs in Salt Lake County today, with no serious injuries reported. Troopers responded to 26 wrecks and 18 slide-offs in Utah County with no injuries reported, said UHP spokesman Cameron Roden.
