Posted: 11:37 PM- Two-term Salt Lake City Council incumbent Nancy Saxton was swept out of her District 4 seat by challenger Luke Garrott on Tuesday, while J.T. Martin won election in District 6 over Roger J. McConkie, according to unofficial results.

Incumbent Van Turner fought off a challenge by Michael Clara to win a third term in District 2. The west-side businessman prevailed by 53 percent to 46 percent.

Turner contended that he has worked hard to capture resources for the city's west side.

"It was a little closer than I would have liked," he said, referring to Clara's showing. "But I'm very excited."

"We're going to continue to move the city forward and make improvements on the west side," he said Tuesday night.

In District 4, Garrott, a University of Utah political science professor, soundly defeated Saxton with 57 percent to the incumbent's 42 percent.

Garrott ran on a platform of bringing policymaking closer to the people.

"We started with no name recognition," he said. "This shows me that people in Salt Lake City care about their city and put their hope in politics."

Garrott said he would work hard to build bridges and coalitions among various sectors of Salt Lake City.

In District 6, Emigration Market owner J.T. Martin won the seat being vacated by unsuccessful mayoral candidate Dave Buhler by defeating his opponent 53 percent to 46 percent.

He ran on a platform of representing small-business men in city government.

"I'm very excited and looking forward to working with our new mayor-elect," he said. "We've got some great challenges ahead but we have great opportunities."
