Outdoor Notebook: Go batty at Bear River Bird Refuge (with video)

Adam Kozlowski, a sensitive-species biologist for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, will present "Going Batty!" - a special program on what the flying mammals eat, where they live and how they help humans. The program will be Oct. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge near Brigham City. After the presentation participants can build a bat house, hear stories and play games. The cost is $1 for children with a $5 maximum per family, Bat house materials are $10. Pre-registration is required. Call 435-723-5887 to reserve a spot.

Birding trip

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a family birding trip to Farmington Bay on Oct. 13 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Most of the trip will be spent at the Farmington Bay Learning Center, but time may also be sent on the marsh. Meet at the McDonald's in Centerville at 8:30 a.m. or at the Shopko parking lot in Salt Lake City at 7:30 a.m. for carpooling. Call Deedee at 801-272-8060.

Timp Cave anniversary

Timpanogos Cave National Monument in American Fork Canyon is celebrating its 85th anniversary on Oct. 14 with cake and refreshments and a free program featuring live birds of prey from 6 to 7 p.m. at the visitors center. Oct. 14 is also the last day the caves will be open in 2007. Caves are scheduled to open for the 2008 season in May, conditions permitting. Call 801-756-5238 for more information.

Fishlake maps available

New travel maps for the Fishlake National Forest can be picked up the forest supervisor's office in Richfield or the ranger district headquarters in Fillmore, Beaver and Loa. The free maps illustrate all routes on the national forest and indicate motorized and nonmotorized designated routes. Call 435-896-9233 for more information.

Rivers Council benefit

The Utah Rivers Council is holding its annual benefit dinner and auctions Oct. 13 starting at 6 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 2 N. Medical Drive, Salt Lake City. Wildlife Board meeting

The Utah Wildlife Board meets today at 9 a.m. at the Division of Natural Resources building, 1594 W. North Temple, Salt Lake City.

Topics to be discussed and voted on include: setting fishing rules for 2008, including fishing tournament rules changes; a certificate of registration pre-authorization; a five-year review of the brine shrimp rule; and a five-year review on aquaculture and fish stocking.

Wild Bird Center party

The Wild Bird Center in Layton, 1860 N. 1000 West, is celebrating its sixth anniversary on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

See and learn about wild birds of prey from HawkWatch International and the Ogden Nature Center. The Wasatch and Great Salt Lake Audubon Chapters, The Utah Nature Conservancy, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Farmington Bay Nature Center and Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge will join the celebration.

Walk for Wishes

The first Walk for Wishes, a two-day 15-mile fundraising walk to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah, will be Oct. 13-14 at Zion National Park. Walkers need to collect $1,000 in donations. Visit www.makeawishutah.org.

Free REI clinics

Local photographer Adam Barker will present a slide show and lead a discussion about fall photography in the Wasatch on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek. Barker will discuss photographic techniques, prime shooting times and locations and offer general insight into capturing dynamic fall images. The instruction will be geared toward photographers of all abilities.

The popular GPS 101 clinic will be Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South. This presentation will cover an introduction to the GPS system, types of GPS receivers and their common use, plus basic GPS functions.

Moab Century Tour

The Moab Century Tour cycling event is Friday through Sunday. The Lance Armstrong Foundation benefit ride will feature supported rides and visits from U.S. Olympian Ron Keifel and NASCAR driver Randy Ruhlman.
