Posted: 8:40 AM- LOGAN - Cache County's towns all plan to challenge the U.S. Census Bureau's 2006 population figures as being too low.

The Cache County planning office is overseeing the mass appeal, compiling the final numbers to be submitted to the agency by Oct. 1.

The Herald Journal reports today that this appears to be the first time a county and every individual city in it have challenged the census.

"I believe that it could be setting a precedent for other counties to follow suit," said Effie Johnson, research analyst in the Utah Governor's Office of Planning and Budget.

The Herald Journal reports that Census estimates place Cache County's population at 98,662. Countywide Planner Wendell Morse contends that figure is off by at least 3,000-6,000 people.

Elsewhere in Utah, Provo, West Jordan, Eagle Mountain and Sarasota Springs also are questioning their population figures.
