Posted: 1:04 PM- Police have arrested two people in the death of a 9-year-old boy who apparently succumbed to hypothermia in a downtown restaurant after being placed in a trash can full of ice water.

Pedro Gaucin-Canales, 36, was booked into jail Wednesday after he told police he and another person put the child in the water at the Melting Pot fondue restaurant, where firefighters found the child dead in the kitchen about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a jail booking report.

Rebecca Hernandez-Velasco, 19, the victim's sister, was booked into jail this morning on suspicion of child-abuse homicide.

Both suspects were employees of the restaurant.

The child's body temperature was 76 degrees when paramedics arrived, the jail report states. A medical examiner concluded the child may have died of hypothermia, but further testing is needed.

Gaucin-Canales told investigators he and another person put the child in warm water after the boy lost consciousness in the ice water. The second person's name was redacted in the report but is presumably Hernandez-Velasco.

The boy, earlier thought by police to have died of a seizure, was at the restaurant with his sister, who was preparing to open the restaurant later in the day, police reported Sunday.

The jail report does not indicate what Gaucin-Canales' relationship is to the boy or to Hernandez-Velasco.

Salt Lake City police have not released the victim's name.
