Posted: 9:26 AM- To say Tony Finau's first attempt to qualify for a PGA Tour event since he turned professional more than a month ago was a successful one would be an understatement.

Finau, the Salt Lake City teenager who won last year's State Amateur, shot a course-record 64 at par-71 Fire Ridge Golf Club in Grafton, Wis., on Monday in the qualifying tournament for the PGA Tour's U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.

Finau, 17, and three other professionals, who all shot 65 Monday, will play in the tournament, which begins Thursday at par-70 Brown Deer Park Golf Club and has a purse of $4 million - low by tour standards because many top players will compete in the British Open.

The U.S. Bank Championship will be televised on the Golf Channel. Corey Pavin is the defending champion.

Gipper Finau, 16, also played in Monday's qualifying event, but shot a 1-over-par 72.

According to a spokesperson at Fire Ridge, Finau made eight birdies and one bogey in wet, windy conditions. Although 64 is the lowest competitive score ever recorded at the course, which opened in 1972, it might not be recorded as the record because the course is usually played at par-72, rather than 71 as on Monday.

The Finau brothers, who live in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City, gave up their amateur status in late May so they could play in The Ultimate Game at Wynn in Las Vegas, which offered a winner-take-all first prize of $2 million.

Tony Finau made the 12-player final and earned $100,000, which was the amount supporters paid for he and Gipper Finau to enter the tournament.

Shortly after Tony finished eighth among the 12, the boys embarked on a four-week golf boot camp of sorts to prepare for the Monday-qualifying circuit. They are also expected to participate in next Monday's Nationwide Tour qualifying event in Omaha, Neb.
