The fourth annual Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon and 5K Run/Walk is July 21 at Ruby's Inn near the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park.

The 13.1-mile course starts near Ruby's Inn and travels down Scenic Byway 12 to Cannonville City Park. The winners will split a purse of $3,000.

Field trips at Ashley

National Forest

The Ashley National Forest Travel Management Planning Team is holding three field trips in July, giving the public a chance to learn about its proposals.

The field trips will start at 8 a.m. and last all day. Participants are asked to bring good walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, lunch, water and their own transportation.

Meet at the Forest Service District office in Duchesene on Saturday for the first trip to explore the Roosevelt/Duchesne District. A trip will be held July 21 to tour the Vernal Ranger District. Meet at the intersection of Red Cloud Loop Rood and Highway 191. The last trip will take place July 28 on the Flaming Gorge Ranger District. Meet at the district office in Manila.

Birding trips in Big

Cottonwood Canyon

Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding the annual Brighton Bird Count at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Jeanne Le Ber and Ray Smith will lead the count. Meet at 8 a.m. at the parking lot adjacent to the Silver Lake Visitor Center. There are easy, moderate and strenuous walks as part of the Brighton Bird Count. A potluck lunch will be held at noon. Beginning birders are welcome. Carpooling is encouraged, with contributions for gas money requested. Call 801-532-7384 to confirm.

Free Fishing Day, prizes at Cabela's in Lehi

The Cabela's store in Lehi, 2502 W. Grand Terrace Parkway, is holding Free Fishing Day on July 21 from 8 a.m. to noon. An on-site fishing pond will be stocked and open for angling. Prizes will be awarded for anglers who catch tagged fish. All children will receive a free goody bag.

Free REI clinics on bike commuting, maintenance

Community cycling advocate Lou Melini will host a discussion titled "Bicycle Commuting 101." The clinic is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, East Millcreek. Melini has logged more than 300,000 kilometers of bicycle travel.

Learn the basics os bike maintenance July 19 at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West. The clinic, which starts at 7 p.m., will help demystify the challenge of keeping road or mountain bikes in good working order.
