Police seek witnesses to fatal shooting

West Valley City police are looking for people who may have witnessed a fatal shooting early Sunday on Interstate 15 while riding in a vehicle. Around 1:15 a.m. Sunday, 17-year-old Luis A. Trujillo, of Kearns, was one of three teenagers traveling south in a car on I-15 near State Road 201 when someone in another car pulled beside the three young men and began shooting, according to police. A witness said the shooter's vehicle was a brown or gold full-size sedan, possibly 1990s, Capt. Tom McLachlan said. The witness said the car was being driven with its lights off as it pulled behind Trujillo's car. The witness also told police there was a white sport-utility vehicle traveling behind Trujillo's car whose occupants may be witnesses. Anyone with information in the case can call 801-840-4000.

American Fork teen killed in Idaho crash

An American Fork teenager died and a second teenager was injured Monday in a car crash in Idaho. Travis S. Landeen, 18, died at the scene near Hazelton, Idaho, according to the Idaho State Police. Jonathan A. Keith, 18, was flown to St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls, where he was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon. Around 6:15 p.m. Monday, Landeen was driving a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara west on Interstate 84 when he veered off the left side of the road then overcorrected. The Vitara rolled into the median. Both men were wearing seat belts, police said. Landeen was student body president at American Fork High School in the 2006-07 school year.

Man gets 10 years for child porn

A federal judge on Monday gave a 10-year prison sentence to the man who once allegedly described himself as the "king of child pornography." Kirk A. Swearingen also will be on probation for life after pleading guilty to one count of possessing child pornography. Swearingen, 46, was arrested last year after he tried to use false information to rent a Salt Lake City apartment. During that investigation, detectives found computer discs with child pornography.

Two charged in SLC stabbing

Two Salt Lake City men accused of stabbing another man with an ice pick and robbing him when he tried to protect his mentally handicapped son were charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated robbery. The two first degree felonies were filed against James Arthur Coffin and Darrin James Gallegos, both 21. Police say that on June 18 Gallegos and Coffin threatened to kill a Salt Lake City man and his 21-year-old son and demanded money. When the father stepped in front of his son, the men allegedly stabbed him 14 times in the torso, court documents state. They then allegedly knocked him to the ground, kicked him and stole his wallet. The father was hospitalized in serious condition. An 18-year-old woman, who pulled up and let Gallegos and Coffin into her car, also faces a second degree felony charge of obstructing justice.
