Missing man found; vehicle stuck in mud

Search crews found a 39-year-old Riverton man reported missing since Wednesday. Officials with the Box Elder County Search and Rescue team and sheriff's office located the man whose vehicle had become stuck in alkali mud at Crater Island near the Nevada state line, according to a sheriff's office news release. A crew of 13 aided in the search that ended Friday evening when a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter airlifted the man to a base camp nearby. The man then flew to Salt Lake City, where he was reunited with family. The vehicle remained stuck in the mud, according to the sheriff's office.

Fire crew battles blaze expected to burn out

Firefighters battled a 500-acre wildfire in the mountains of Tooele County Saturday that did not threaten any homes or major roadways. The fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the Lakeside Mountains, west of the Great Salt Lake, and burned grass, sage brush and juniper. It was expected to be contained late this afternoon, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby said. Fire officials are investigating, but the cause did not appear to be suspicious, Rigby said. The National Weather Service extended a red-flag warning for wildfire danger through today.

Man drowns in tub at assisted-living facility

A man drowned in a bathtub at the Utah State Development Center in Utah County on Saturday night. American Fork police are investigating, but there were no indications of foul play, said American Fork police Sgt. Shawn Nielson. The man, who appeared to be in his early 30s, was found in a tub full of water by an employee of the state-run, assisted-living facility, Nielson said. Emergency medical technicians performed CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Nielson said. Police did not release the man's name pending notification of his family.
