Posted: 3:25 PM- ZCMI Center Mall in downtown Salt Lake City will lose the last of its retail tenants in the coming weeks as the Deseret Book store and men's clothing retailer Mr. Mac vacate the nearly empty mall.

The mall's food court will be all that remains, open indefinitely until a new food court is built nearby, said church spokesman Dale Bills. The new food court will be built south of Eagle Gate Plaza office tower, which is located at 60 E. South Temple, and north of the new KeyBank Tower at 36 S. State.

Bills said work on taking down ZCMI already has begun "and demolition will be fully underway as the summer progresses." He did not have a completion date for demolition. Across the street, work on demolishing Crossroads Mall continues. That mall's adjoining office tower, formerly occupied by KeyBank, will be imploded on August 18.

The church is destroying both ZCMI, Crossroads Plaza mall across the street, and adjoining office buildings straddling Main Street to make way for its $1 billion City Creek Center project, set to include a mix of retail, housing and office space.

Deseret Book said its last day for business in ZCMI Mall is July 13. It will reopen in its new downtown location in the Zions Bank building at 10 E. South Temple on July 17. Its new location, vacant retail space formerly occupied by jewelry retailer O.C. Tanner, is about 6,000 square feet.

That's nearly half of the size of its store in ZCMI Center, but "we're utilizing our space more effectively," said Mark Clegg, vice president of retail stores for Deseret Book, which has 42 stores throughout the West, including 22 in Utah.

Deseret Book not only has a store in ZCMI mall, but its headquarters are in an office building adjoining it. Its new headquarters are located in upper floors of a building that houses the Utah Woolen Mills store at 57 W. South Temple.

Like ZCMI Center, Deseret Book is a business unit of the LDS Church.

In 2011, when the church's City Creek development is scheduled for completion, Deseret Book will move its store into the retail portion of that development, Clegg said. But Mr. Mac will not be moving into City Creek Center, said Stuart Christensen, co-owner of Mr. Mac.

The last day of business in ZCMI Center for Mr. Mac, which has nine locations in Utah, is June 30. It will move to vacant retail space at 160 E. South Temple - permanently, Christensen said. He said the location is a good one, with plenty of space, parking and good visibility.

In its waning days at ZCMI, however, business has not been exactly bad, Christensen said.

"With the office clientele, it's actually been pretty vibrant," he said.
