Posted: 11:35 AM- The percentage of Utahns who don't have health insurance is growing at a slower rate than in the past. But not among children.
The number of uninsured Utahns ages zero to 18 years old grew to 89,500 in 2006 - a 26 percent jump over the previous year. By comparison, the number of adults without insurance dropped from 225,600 in 2005 to 225,400 in 2006.
So while the uninsurance rate among all Utahns grew 2.5 percent, the rate among children spiked 23 percent.
Some of those uninsured children could qualify for state or federal subsidized insurance, but haven't yet. Because of a $4 million boost to the state's Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) by the Legislature earlier this year, 12,000 new children will qualify for insurance. Enrollment for CHIP will start July 2.
