The Senate pushed forward a proposal Tuesday that would create a Utah Sports Authority to govern boxing and promote sporting events such as golf tournaments and ski races.

The bill faced little opposition. Only Plain City Republican Sen. Scott Jenkins voted against the measure. But the Pete Suazo Athletic Commission, which regulates boxing and ultimate fighting, has expressed concerns.

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Mike Dmitrich, is a hybrid of three bills, two of which focus on boxing. And the proposals of Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper, would disband the current commission, which he thinks unfairly favors ultimate fighting over boxing. Commissioners say Hughes is too close to the issue, as he manages a boxer.
